Language at The Grange
Language at The Grange is part of our wider commitment to learning that is rooted in people, place and shared experience.
From Spring, we will be introducing a small programme of contemporary language workshops designed to feel open, social and achievable, whether you are starting from scratch or returning to a language you once knew.
These are not formal classes and there are no exams, tests or pressure. Instead, the focus is on spoken language, confidence and real conversation, delivered in a relaxed community setting. The aim is simple: to make language learning feel human, enjoyable and genuinely useful, rather than academic or intimidating.
What to expect
Our first programme will centre on conversational French, offered as a series of short weekly workshops rather than a long-term course. Each block will typically run for six to eight weeks, allowing enough time to build familiarity and confidence without asking for a heavy commitment. This structure also means people can join at natural points through the year, with new series starting seasonally. Alongside French, we will also be exploring other conversational language sessions, with Spanish firmly in view, as the programme grows. As with all our activity, any expansion will be guided by interest, accessibility and the character of the community using the building.
Sessions will be welcoming and participatory, with seating arranged to encourage conversation and shared learning. Groups will be kept to a comfortable size so that everyone has space to speak and be heard.
Who it is for
Language at The Grange is open to adults of all backgrounds and experience levels. You might be a complete beginner, someone who learned a language years ago and wants to reconnect with it, or someone who simply enjoys the idea of learning alongside others in a friendly environment. No prior knowledge is required, and there is no expectation to get things right first time.
How the workshops work
From the outset, the emphasis is on listening and speaking rather than written work or grammar exercises. Useful phrases are introduced gradually, conversation begins straight away, and mistakes are treated as a normal part of learning. English is used sparingly, only where it helps build reassurance and understanding. The tone is supportive and encouraging, with confidence developing naturally over time.
As the programme develops, participants will be able to move from introductory sessions into more expanded conversational workshops, following a clear but flexible pathway. This rolling model allows people to continue learning at their own pace, or to step away and return in a later season if they wish.
Workshop lead
The sessions will be led by Camila Bouaza, a professional therapist and multilingual facilitator with a deep personal connection to language and culture. Camila speaks fluent English, French and Arabic, and brings a calm, attentive approach shaped by her therapeutic background, where listening, reassurance and confidence-building are central.
Her heritage reflects a rich blend of Algerian Berber and Moroccan French Canadian roots. Having lived in the city of Montreal and now settled in Yorkshire, Camila carries with her a lived understanding of how language moves between cultures, families and everyday life. This breadth of experience brings warmth and authenticity to the workshops, where language is shared not just as words, but as a way of connecting with others.
Part of a wider offer
Language at The Grange sits alongside our broader educational and cultural activity, reflecting our belief that learning works best when it is social, affordable and connected to everyday life. These workshops are as much about community and cultural exchange as they are about language itself.
