A PLACE FOR EVERYONE ACCESS TO ALL THE GRANGE

The Open Fields Circle – Walking Club

The Open Fields Circle is a walking club rooted in fresh air, open fields and the strength of shared footsteps. It brings people together who value good company, familiar paths and the simple pleasure of being outdoors.

The Open Fields Circle Walking Club meets weekly at The Grange, setting off together for walks in and around Pontefract & District. Dates and details are confirmed in advance, with a full year-long calendar shared across the membership, allowing everyone to plan ahead and join walks throughout the seasons. Membership is free for everyone, making the group open and welcoming to all. Where possible, free training is also offered, including Walk Leader training and First Aid, alongside practical sessions led by experienced map readers. These focus on developing core navigation skills such as reading contours, understanding scale and symbols, route planning, and orientating a map on the ground — building confidence in navigating without reliance on GPS and supporting members who would like to take on a more active role within the club.

The regular routes wind through farmland and along hedgerows, following footpaths shaped by years of use. Around Carleton, the landscape opens out, offering space to breathe and long views across the fields. Pontefract provides its own blend of greenery and history, with gentle rises and dips that naturally slow the pace and invite reflection.

Walking is steady and sociable. There is room for conversation, for laughter and for stretches of shared silence. Small details are noticed along the way: the sound of boots on gravel, the smell of damp earth, the changing light as clouds drift overhead. Friendships grow here easily, without fuss, carried along by the rhythm of walking together. People join for all sorts of reasons, and there is always space for another pair of boots on the path.

The seasons bring their own character to the walks. Spring offers new growth and lambs in the fields. Summer allows longer routes and time to linger. Autumn arrives with crisp air and leaf-covered paths, while winter brings bracing walks, rosy cheeks and the shared satisfaction of having stepped out regardless of the cold.

From time to time, the club ventures further afield for seasonal days out in the English countryside, travelling together via an enjoyable train journey from one of Pontefract’s three train stations, or by a dedicated coach to and from The Grange. These outings are relaxed and well loved, marked by packed lunches, muddy boots and the contented tiredness that follows a day spent outdoors.

Most walks finish back at The Grange, with the option of a pint or fresh-ground coffee, giving everyone the chance to sit, unwind and continue the conversation before heading home.

The Open Fields Circle Walking Club is, at its heart, about showing up. About fresh air, familiar routes and the companionship found in moving forward together, one step at a time.
